Whether you’re working on a semi truck, motorcycle, restoring classic car trim, or bringing a stainless steel project back to life, knowing how to do it properly is key to getting that mirror shine.
At Alberta Metal Polishing, we’ve spent years perfecting the craft. We offer professional metal polishing services in Red Deer County and stock some of the industry’s best supplies at Alberta Shine Supply for customers who prefer the DIY approach. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from choosing the right tools to avoiding common mistakes.
What is Metal Polishing?
Metal polishing is the process of removing surface imperfections such as scratches, oxidation, pitting, and discoloration to create a smooth, reflective finish. It’s not just about making things shiny — polishing also helps protect the surface by sealing the pores of the metal, making it more resistant to corrosion and wear.
Common metals we polish in Alberta include:
Stainless Steel — Popular for its durability and resistance to rust, but it can still lose its shine over time.
Aluminum — Lightweight and versatile, perfect for fuel tanks, motorcycles, automotive trim, and wheels.
Chrome — A favorite for decorative accents but prone to pitting if not maintained.
Brass & Copper — Often found in decorative hardware and vintage pieces.
Each metal type requires a slightly different approach, which is why professional expertise can make all the difference.
Why Choose Professional Metal Polishing in Alberta?
Sure, there are plenty of “quick shine” products out there, but professional polishing takes it to the next level. Here’s why customers across Central Alberta choose us over DIY shortcuts:
Restoration Power: We can bring back pieces most people think are beyond saving through deep sanding and power polishing.
Superior Finish: We use industry-grade polishing equipment and compounds for a deeper, longer-lasting shine. Some of the products we use consist of Marpol, Menzerna, Hilzinger and Norton.
Time Savings: A proper mirror finish can takes hours if you’re not equipped with the right tools.
Expert Knowledge: Different metals, finishes, and conditions require different products and techniques.

Step-by-Step Metal Polishing Process
Here’s how we approach a standard polishing job at Alberta Metal Polishing:
Step 1: Cleaning & Prep
Neutralize the salt, calcium, and other contaminates in the pours of the metal using Hydrochloric Acid. This will also remove all all dirt, grease, and surface contaminants that will clog up your sanding pads
Step 2: Sanding
Work through progressively finer grits of Norton Gold sandpaper until the surface is smooth and free of visible scratches. We typically start at 180 grit on most items, and we finish at 600 grit.
Step 3: Initial Cut
Using a Heavy Cut Wheel and a Heavy Cut Compound (like Marpol C94 or Menzerna 439T), begin cutting the surface doing a cross-cut pattern. This means going over the piece several times at different angles. We like to use Hilzinger’s Grey Heavy Cut Wheel for cutting.
Step 4: Intermediate Cut
Switch to a softer wheel and medium-cut / coloring compound (such as Marpol C41 or Menzerna P14F) to introduce some color, depth and clarity into the metal. This step removes the hash lines left behind, introduces a deeper color to the metal allowing for a deeper, wetter shine. We’ve been quite fond of the 60/60 Heavy Weight Untreated Mirror Finishing Wheel by Hilzinger. These wheels will provide the “umff” of an 86/82 wheel, and the finish of a 60/60 finishing wheel.
Step 5: Final Polish
Use a flannel buffing wheel with a fine finishing compound to achieve a mirror-like reflection. We recommend pairing a product like Volax Blue or 480BLF with Hilzinger’s Molten Flannel.
