Step 0 – Check for Coating

Before starting, determine if your wheels have a clear coat. If they are coated, you'll need to strip them first. Check out our [Removing Coatings Guide] (insert link) for detailed instructions.

Step 1 – Acid Wash

An acid wash helps remove salts, oxidation, grime, and surface contaminants.

Dilute your acid at a 10:1 ratio (10 parts water to 1 part acid).
Spray the acid evenly onto the wheel and let it sit for about one minute .
Scrub the wheel using a brush while wearing gloves and a respirator for safety.
Rinse thoroughly with water and allow the wheel to dry completely.

⚠️ Note: Aluminum is porous and may take time to dry fully before sanding.

Step 2 – Sanding

For this guide, we’ll start sanding at 240 grit , but if your wheel is heavily pitted, you may need to start with a coarser grit.

Sanding the Barrels and Valleys

Using a 9000 RPM sander , sand the barrels and valleys of the wheel with 240 grit until all pitting and salt stars are removed.
Progress to 320 grit , ensuring you remove all scratches from the previous grit before moving forward.
Finish with 600 grit , making extra passes if needed to eliminate any remaining 320-grit scratches.

Sanding the Face

Use an orbital palm sander to sand the face of the wheel, including the areas between the lug nut holes.
Follow the same grit progression: 240 → 320 → 600 .
It’s also recommended to hit the innermost valley with at least 320 and 600 grit during this stage for a uniform finish.

Step 3 – Buffing & Power Polishing

Now it's time to bring out the shine using your DeWalt DWP849X polisher.

1. Heavy Cut – Attach a Heavy Cut Wheel and use Marpol C94 at 3500 RPM .

Start at the lug nut holes , then work through the valleys , between the holes , and finally, the face before moving to the barrels.

2. Medium Cut – Switch to a Medium Cut Wheel with Marpol C41 , following the same process.

3. Finishing Cut – Finish with a Finishing Wheel and Marpol Volax Blue for a high-gloss shine.

Final Touch

Congratulations! You now have a shiny, refinished Alcoa .

Remove any polishing compound that may have gotten on the tire by wiping it down with Mineral Spirits .
Apply a water-based tire dressing to enhance the look and give it a professional finish.

Can Metal Polishing Remove Scratches?

In short – Yes, Aluminum Polishing can effectively remove scratches from aluminum surfaces.

The extent to which polishing can eliminate scratches, however, depends heavily on various key factors such as:

Depth and severity of the scratches
Type of polishing technique used
Quality of the products you use

In most cases, light scratches can be buffed out completely. While deeper scratches will be diminished, and often less visible from a few feet away, they won’t be completely removed unless you incorporate sanding into your initial process.

Orbital Sanding:

Pros:

Versatile: Orbital sanders are suitable for various materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, wood, and other materials. If you’re a jack of all trades an Orbital Sander may be a great addition to your toolbox.
Random pattern: Orbital sanders move in a random orbital pattern, reducing the risk of swirl marks and providing a smoother finish.
Less aggressive: Orbital sanders are less aggressive than rotary sanders, making them easier on the arms, less dusty, and making them more suitable for sanding around delicate areas.
Reduced risk of overheating: The random orbital motion generates less friction, reducing the risk of overheating the surface and the machine.

Cons:

Less aggressive: An orbital sander will take longer to remove material, or in other words, remove a scratch. This is most-apparent when trying to tackle a large/deeps scratch or gouge.

Rotary Sanding:

Pros:

High rate of material removal: Rotary sanders are very effective at removing material quickly, in other words, removing a scratch quickly.
Aggressive: Rotary sanding is much more aggressive than orbital, allowing them to tackle tough surfaces and remove deeper scratches.
Wide range of attachments: Various attachments can fit on and work well with your rotary. This includes sanding discs, cutting disks, buffs and wheels, polishing pads, brushes, and more.

Cons:

Risk of swirl marks and gouges: Rotary sanders move in a circular motion, increasing the risk tough-to-cut of swirl marks on the surface. Because of their high speed, and less-forgiving circular motion, you can gouge the surface creating more work for yourself in the long-run.
Less control: Rotary sanders can be more challenging to control compared to orbital sanders. This is most-apparent when running high speeds such as 9000rpm and 12000rpm.
Potential for overheating: The continuous rotary motion generates more heat, and larger power consumption increases the risk of overheating the surface, the machine, and your hands if not used with caution. For the pros: It’s always a good idea to have multiple machines on-hand, if one gets too hot or breaks.

Differences:

Motion: Orbital sanders move in a random orbital pattern, while rotary sanders move in a circular motion.
Aggressiveness : Rotary sanders are typically more aggressive and faster at removing material compared to orbital sanders.
Finish : Orbital sanders provide a smoother finish with fewer swirl marks, while rotary sanders may leave more visible swirl marks if not used correctly.
