Ceramic Coating Maintenance: Washing, Decontamination & Annual Inspections

2026 Acura MDX freshly coated with System X Max G+ with the windows, lights and trim masked off.

A Ceramic Coating makes your vehicle easier to clean, boosts the gloss, and keeps it protected, but your vehicle still needs regular care. Proper washing, prompt contaminant removal, and professional annual maintenance help keep the coated surface performing as intended. At Alberta Metal Polishing in Red Deer, our annual System X maintenance service includes an exterior wash, decontamination, coating inspection, and System X Topcoat application. Here’s how to care for your coating between visits, and what to expect when your annual service comes due.

How to Wash a Ceramic-Coated Vehicle

System X recommends washing approximately every two weeks to prevent excessive contamination buildup. Your vehicle may need more frequent washes when exposed to harsh environments or driving conditions.

For a safe hand wash:

  • Wash the vehicle out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
  • Use a pH-neutral, ceramic-safe shampoo.
  • Rinse the surface to wash away loose dirt before doing a contact-wash. Contact-washes are not always necessary every time you wash your vehicle.
  • Use clean wash mitts and the two-bucket method, keeping rinse water separate from soapy water.
  • Work from the top down, leaving the dirtiest areas until last.
  • Use separate tools for wheels.
  • Dry thoroughly with clean, quality automotive drying towels, using little to no pressure.

If using a commercial car wash, always choose the touch-less option. Avoid automatic brushes, shared wash-bay brushes, and the spray-wax option.

While these coatings do harden your paint, a coating does not make paint bulletproof. Contaminated supplies and aggressive washing can still scratch the finish.

Why Drying is important

Even a coated vehicle can develop water spots. When water evaporates, minerals can remain on the surface. Avoid leaving your vehicle to air-dry after washing.

Remove bird droppings, bugs, and tree sap promptly. Avoid scrubbing, abrasive cleaners, or polishing compounds to remove stubborn marks yourself. If a deposit will not come off safely, have it assessed. Professional treatment can address the problem without unnecessary abrasion.

Does Reduced Water Beading Mean the Coating Has Failed?

No. If your coating isn't performing the way that it used to, more often than not it's simply clogged and in need a good decontamination wash.

Over time, road film and other contamination can build up over a coated finish and interfere with its water repellency. If your coating's performance remains reduced after decontamination, an inspection helps determine what attention is needed. Luckily, with our System X Ceramic Coatings - you're fully covered under warranty if any problems arise, whether that's 12 months or 12 years down the road.

Our annual maintenance includes both cleaning and an assessment of the coating.

What Our Annual Ceramic Coating Service Includes

1. Exterior Wash

We thoroughly shampoo & wash the coated surfaces to remove loose dirt and road grime before assessing the finish.

2. Decontamination

Using professional-grade products such as Iron Decontaminators, we fully decontaminate your coating, neutralizing and removing any fallout, ferris iron particles, and other contaminates.

3. Coating Inspection

We assess the coating’s condition and performance, looking for areas that may need closer attention such as further decontamination, or even a re-coat of the installed product, under warranty (free of charge).

If we identify concerns beyond routine maintenance, we discuss them with you.

4. System X Topcoat Application

We apply System X Topcoat, a maintenance coating designed for annual servicing of existing System X coatings.

How Long Does Annual Maintenance Take?

At Alberta Metal Polishing, a typical annual service takes approximately five hours and can usually be completed within one day.

Vehicle size, surface condition, and any additional work can affect timing. We’ll confirm the expected schedule when booking and provide aftercare instructions for the freshly applied Topcoat before pickup.

Annual Inspections and Your System X Warranty

For vehicles covered with warranty, annual inspections must be completed by an approved applicator within 30 days before or after the anniversary date of the last service.

The service includes an exterior wash, decontamination, inspection, and Crystal or Topcoat application. The inspection must also be recorded on SystemX.com within 30 days. This inspection, and the Topcoat application also gets reported to CARFAX.

Missing the required annual inspection window voids the warranty under those terms. We recommend arranging your appointment before the anniversary so there is time to accommodate your schedule.

Annual servicing is one part of maintaining warranty eligibility. Regular care and the other conditions in your warranty documents still apply.
